Music as Medicine
E X P R E S S I O N | Music. 🎶 An ancient mood-altering modality with new physiological understanding. Music is almost everywhere we go— in our cars, grocery stores, “that cute little shop down the street,” gyms, spas, parties, airports, farmer’s markets—playlists abound, and present at each rite of passage from birthdays to funerals. And, we listen to it a lot, about 5 hours a day! In what seems like forever, we’ve known of it’s mood altering affects. Instinctively, we know when we’re ready to party, we put on music that gets us feeling friendly; when we’re ready to relax, we put on things that calm and soothe us. But, did you also know it can reduce pain and stress along with improving your immune function? It does, and it’s similar to how being in nature impacts your health too! Playing or listening to music increases the production of natural killer cells and reduces the stress hormone cortisol, in addition to other healthy immune system functioning. Pretty cool! And super good for you! As I write this post, I’m listenting to @haimtheband, and about to cut the rug! Music mind-body-spirit goodness! #liveyourwell
