N A T U R E | Phytoncides. Airborne chemicals trees and plants emit to protect themselves with from germs and insects, and benefit people too! Improving our immune function and increasing the number and activity of natural killer white blood cells (e.g. cells we need to ward off viruses). Researchers theorized that part of the improved immune functioning was related to a decrease in “stress” hormones like adrenaline and noradrenaline, the decrease in those chemicals don’t just improve immune function in people, they also improve all-around mental health.
