Reading for Mental Health

E X P R E S S I O N | Bibliotherapy. An intervention in mental health taken up by a range of helpers like therapists, health coaches, medical doctors and bibliophiles. It’s prescribed reading to treat mental health symptoms of the depression, anxiety and general discontent with life. The books range from self-help, fiction to non-fiction.

In times of change and distress, I often recommend Pema Chodron’s When Things Fall Apart, and in almost the same breath, I’ll recommend Thich Nhat Hanh’s The Long Road Turns to Joy: A Guide to Walking Meditation. Pema’s words simultaneously sear and comfort— full of universal truisms and merciful understanding— it feels like it’s written just for you. Thich’s walking meditation while soothing and easy to read, what I like best about it is that it gives the mind a steady focus and the movement the body needs to integrate and settle.
